Since Custom Furniture opened in 1938, we have learned a great deal about how to best choose and care for your furniture. We want you to enjoy your furniture as much as possible, so we have written down some tips that we have learned in our 50 years of business.
- Preparing for your store visit
- Dusting your furniture
- Oiling your furniture
Measuring your space
The best thing that you can do to prepare for your shopping experience is to measure the spot where you plan to put your new furniture. If you come into the store knowing the maximum and minimum space requirements, it will make your search for the perfect piece much easier. In addition, if you are looking for an entertainment center or even just something to hide your television in, don't forget to measure the height, width and depth of the tv. Then you can be sure that it will fit inside of the cabinet. [Top]
Matching colors
We have found that people are often not looking to replace an entire room of furniture, but instead want to find one or two pieces that will fit into the current "look" of the room. However, matching the color of a new piece of furniture to the older furniture may not be as easy as it seems. If you are in this situation, we recommend that you bring in a drawer that has the color that you are trying to match. Or, if your new furniture will sit next to a sofa or upholstered chair, you could bring in a pillow. That way you can compare colors before you take your new furniture home. [Top]
Dusting your furniture
We have been asked before if there is anything special that needs to be done to dust furniture. Not really! All you need is a dusting product like Endust and a soft cloth. Just spray the Endust on the cloth and dust away! [Top]Oiling your furniture
We are often asked how often a piece of furniture should be oiled. Your furniture should be oiled only a few times a year. The oil is especially needed in the winter when your furnace is on. Oiling will replace the moisture in the wood and help prevent cracks. We recommend either lemon oil or orange oil. You should avoid oils that also contain wax. [Top]
